Stortorget .jpg)
Stortorget has been Malmö’s biggest marketplace and was Northern Europe’s largest city square for a long time.
In the middle of the square stands a riding horseman statue of King Karl X Gustav how took Skåne from the Danes through the Roskilde Treaty in 1658.
In 1536 Malmö authoritative mayor Jörgen Kock took the initiative to built Stortorget and the city well in the middle of the square which today is covered by a bronze water sculpture.
Today Stortorget is a city square for major event and entertainment. It’s used all year round for big Festivals, small events like Wintermezzo or easter activities. During the winter the square has a skating-rink for the publik.
Lilla Torg
After a few decades Stortoget wasn’t big enough so they built Lilla Torg just around the corner. Lilla Torg was a marketplace, on the west side of the square the crowd packed together for the meat counters while on the southern side newly baked bread smelled sweet. If you walked over to the east side you could find the fish stalls. Since it was the maids and the upper wife’s who did their daily groceries shopping here you could find on the north side several grocery shoppers.
To day it is still used as a market place, just in a different way. People come together to enjoy a fine meal or just a cold beer with good friends. Lilla Torg is packed with restaurants and coffee shops that will suit every taste.
Lilla Torg is preserved almost in its original state, from 1590.
Gamla Väster
Gamla Väster means Old west, because it’s located in the west part of the city center between Kungsparken and Stortorget. In the 19th century the simple people lived here but during 1980 the property values went up and the houses were sold for a larger sum of money.
To day Gamla Väster is preserved in its original state with colorful buildings and brick houses. Take a nice stroll and visit the art galleries, restaurants and coffee shops a long the way.
Gustav Adolfs Torg
Did you know that Malmö was Sweden’s capital during King Gustav IV Adolf 1806-1807?
Well that is true!
He tried to make his home town Malmö Sweden’s second capital but was dethroned and failed. He did manage to get the square named after himself, Gustav Adolfs square. If you walk from Stortorget and straight towards Triangeln you will cross Gustav Adolfs square.

St Gertrud
St Gertrud is located across the street from Caroli City. The name St Gertrud comes from the chapel that stood there before the Reformation but was destroyed and so the name St Gertrud. Since the buildings are carefully restored and preserved, St Gertrud’s block was given the Europa Nostra diploma in 1979.
